Morton/White Pass won their debut game with a 54-25 victory over the Oakville Acorns Monday night.
The Timberwolves led 14-8 after a quarter and 24-15 with 2:38 remaining in the half. Their full court pressure defense forced 12 turnovers over the next 13 minutes as they went on a 20-2 scoring run. Morton/White Pass scored 10 of the final 12 points for the 29-point win.
“It was a good first game,” coach Lauren Kanyer said. “We played great defense and blocked out well. Our focus this next week will be practicing at game speed so we can finish a few more of our shots.”
The Timberwolves put up 85 shots in the 32 minutes converting 24 (28 percent). They more than made up for their misses by forcing 34 turnovers and outrebounding Oakville 51-39. The Acorns hit 11 of 33 shots (33 percent) for the game.
Freshman Whitney Elledge led Morton/White Pass with 12 points and six steals. Sophomore Kayla Reynolds added eight points and six more steals.
“I thought Whitney did a great job coming off the bench for us,” Kanyer said. “I felt like Kayla controlled the game and did a good job of running our offense.”
Senior Nicole Anderson, junior Chelbi Eveland (eight rebounds), sophomore Maddy McCoy, and freshman Ashley Kelly (five steals, four rebounds) all scored six points. Freshmen Darian Atkinson and Jade Lundy added four apiece with junior Stefana Bertucci getting two.
