at Napavine (Jan. 24, 2010)

In Napavine the Tigers led 15-6 after a quarter, and limited the Timberwolves to just two second quarter points for a 23-8 halftime lead. They went on to win 62-26.
“We need to handle the ball better (26 turnovers), but that will come with experience,” coach Lauren Kanyer said. “Darian (Atkinson) got us off to a good start. She was aggressive and looking to score. Ashley (Kelly) did a good job rebounding early on and Chelbi (Eveland) posted up strong.”
Atkinson scored eight points, making a pair of three-pointers, with Eveland getting six. Kelly added five points, Kayla Reynolds four, and Jeanie Mullins three. They shot 24 percent for the game (10 of 41). Napavine finished at 40 percent (24 of 60). Stefana Bertucci grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.

Jan. 15, 2011

Timberwolves;

This week we played Mossyrock and Napavine. We lost both. We lost to Mossy by five. We got in foul trouble early in the game, I think we can beat them though. When we played Napavine, I thought it was our best game, we just had too many turnovers. We handled their press good. :)

vs Napavine (Jan. 13, 2011)

Morton/White Pass hosted fifth-ranked Napavine on Thursday in Morton and lost 52-29.
The Tigers jumped to a quick 7-0 lead after two minutes making their first three shots. They then missed 17 of their next 19 shots as Morton/White Pass pulled within three points at 12-9 with 4:30 remaining in the first half. Napavine led 19-9 at the half.
Morton / White Pass stayed within shouting distance (30-18) getting outscored 11-9 in the third quarter as they limited the Tigers to just 2 of 11 shooting from the floor (Napavine converted 7 of 11 free throws in the quarter).
The T-Wolves closed the gap to 11 points (35-24) with four minutes left in the game after a Chelbi Eveland free throw. From that point on Napavine made 9 of 10 field goals scoring 18 points in the final 3:57 of the game. The Tigers went 11 of 14 from the floor overall in the quarter for 23 points after scoring just 30 through the first three frames.
“This was a fun game to be a part of,” coach Lauren Kanyer said. “We blocked out extremely well and took Napavine out of their offense. Unfortunately, late in the game they hit some shots and put it out of reach.”
Freshman Whitney Elledge (4 of 8 shooting) and Eveland (4 of 9) each scored nine points in the loss, with Eveland adding a career-best 10 rebounds. Maddy McCoy nailed two second half three-pointers off the bench to finish with six points. Ashley Kelly (six rebounds) added four points and Darian Atkinson one. Stefana Bertucci grabbed six of Morton/White Pass’ 32 rebounds.
“It was nice to see Maddy come off the bench and hit a couple of three-pointers,” Kanyer said.

vs Napavine (Jan. 13, 2011)

at Mossyrock (Jan. 11, 2011)

Hosting the Timberwolves, the Vikings trailed for much of the game but used a big second half to win 45-40.
Morton / White Pass scored the first seven points of the game and held Mossyrock without a field goal until 24 seconds into the second quarter. The Vikings missed their first 15 attempts, and they were 4 of 28 in the first half, but trailed by just three points (21-18) after two quarters.
“We didn’t have very good shot selection in the first half,” Mossyrock coach Gale Bridges said. “At halftime we talked about running our offense through a few times and see if we can get a better shot than taking a three as soon as we get down the court.”
Mossyrock took their first lead on sophomore Autumn Moorcroft’s layup with 2:07 left in the third quarter (24-23). They never trailed, and the game was never tied, from that point on.
“We had a great start,” Morton/White Pass coach Lauren Kanyer said. “We played great defense most of the night, but didn’t block a couple of times in the second half and gave them easy baskets.”
The Vikings led 31-27 after three quarters. The T-Wolves pulled to within a point three different times, but could never tie the game.
“We also talked about doing a better job of blocking out and rebounding,” Bridges said. “We did a better job of both and held on for a tough win. Anytime you play your rivals it’s going to be a dog fight to the end.”
Jordan Nelson missed 14 of her 16 shots, but saved her biggest bucket for last hitting a three-point dagger with 2:04 to go a possession after Morton/White Pass pulled to within a point.
“Jordan had a tough time scoring in the first half; the shots just wouldn’t drop,” Bridges said. “But give her a lot of credit. She kept shooting and that was a big difference for us in the game. The three she hit at crunch time in the fourth quarter probably sealed the win for us.”
“We did a good job of covering their shooters,” Kanyer said. “But late in the game we left some people open and they hit shots. We need to play a whole game.”
Moorcroft scored nine of her 16 points in the second half to lead the Vikings. Nelson finished with 10 (5 of 6 free throws), Sami Dolan and Sammi Snodgrass four, Montana Eastman, Chelsea Dickinson and Megan Panuska three each, and Taylor Scott two. Mossyrock shot 26 percent for the game (15 of 57), they were 3 of 23 from beyond the three-point arc, and converted 12 of 22 free tosses.
“Autumn has had some big games for us this year, but this was probably the biggest game for her to date. She fought hard for every rebound and every point she scored,” Bridges said. “She just did an outstanding job. Sami scored four points and did a great job of blocking out and rebounding.”
Morton / White Pass freshmen Ashley Kelly (seven rebounds) and Darian Atkinson both scored 11 points. Nicole Anderson and Chelbi Eveland each added five points, Whitney Elledge (three steals) and Stefana Bertucci (11 rebounds) three, and Kayla Reynolds two. They were 13 of 50 for the night, 2 of 12 from the three-point line and 12 of 24 at the line.
“Ashley and Darian both scored well for us,” Kanyer said. “It was good to see Darian driving to the hoop.”

Jan. 6, 2011 (vs Wahkiakum at Randle)

Hosting the Mules from Cathlamet last Thursday in Randle the Timberwolves fell 46-41.
“I felt we should have won this game,” coach Lauren Kanyer said. “We played pretty good defense holding them to 19 percent shooting, but we gave them too many second chances.”
The game was tied at 15-15 after one quarter despite a fast T-Wolves’ start (they led 8-0 and 10-3) with the Mules taking a two-point halftime lead (26-24). Morton/White Pass knotted the game at 31-31 after three frames.
From the 51 second mark of the first quarter to the end of the game, Wahkiakum made just four field goals. They more than made up for their lack of field goal shooting with offensive rebounds (25 total) and points at the free throw line. They converted 22 of 35 for the game, with their final seven points coming at the line. They shot just under 20 percent for the game (10 of 51) and committed 23 turnovers.
The Timberwolves shot 35 percent in the first two quarters, but just 19 percent for the final two (14 of 55 for the game). Freshman Ashley Kelly led Morton/White Pass with 16 points on 6 of 13 shooting and a career-best 11 rebounds. She also finished with four steals. Fellow freshman Whitney Elledge added 15 points (three 3-pointers), six rebounds and three steals. Chelbi Eveland scored four points, Darian Atkinson three, Kayla Reynolds two and Nicole Anderson one. Stefana Bertucci grabbed seven of their 48 rebounds.
“Ashley and Whitney stepped up again for us offensively,” Kanyer said. “That was good to see. And Kayla played great defense on their point guard. We need to cut down on our turnovers (27), especially the unforced ones.”
