vs Pe Ell (Feb. 17, 2011 - district at Castle Rock)
In Castle Rock on Thursday Pe Ell ended the Timberwolves’ season with a 50-40 victory.
“This was a fun game to be a part of,” Kanyer said. “I thought it showed our improvements and helped the girls believe they can play at a higher level.”
Morton / White Pass struggled early in the game committing eight first quarter turnovers. They trailed 10-8 with 2:50 to go in the first quarter and then went scoreless for the next 7:40 as the Trojans scored 15 straight points to take a 25-8 lead. Pe Ell led 27-13 at the half and 34-23 after three quarters.
The Trojans led 42-31 after a pair of free throws with 3:40 remaining. Over the next two minutes and 49 seconds the Timberwolves outscored Pe Ell 9-1 to pull within three points (43-40) with just 51 seconds to go.
Morton / White Pass turned the ball on two of their final three possessions as the Trojans made a field goal and five of six free tosses for the final margin.
“We just needed a little more composure at the end of the game,” Kanyer said.
Atkinson made three three-pointers and led the T-Wolves with nine points. Eveland scored eight points, all in the second half, and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Mullins added a season-best seven points, Kelly (six assists) scored five, Elledge four, Reynolds three, with Jade Lundy and Bertucci getting two apiece. Morton/White Pass shot 41 percent in the second half (9 of 22).
“Darian played well making three 3s,” Kanyer said. “I was excited for Chelbi. She did an excellent job of finding their post players and blocking out. Jade also went in and made some things happen on offense and defense.”
Mullins and Anderson harassed Pe Ell’s leading scorer Sami Robinson into 2 of 18 shooting for the game.
The Timberwolves (8-15 overall, 3-11 league, 1-2 district) are done for the season and loses Nicole Anderson graduation.
“I was thankful for Nicole’s passion and efforts in leading this combination,” Kanyer said. “Overall, I was very proud of the girls and I’m excited for the future.”

vs Northwest Christian (Feb.15, 2011 / district at Centralia)
In Centralia last Tuesday, Morton/White Pass won their first ever district game with a 49-40 victory over the Navigators from Northwest Christian.
"I was proud of the girls for getting a district win," coach Lauren Kanyer said. "We won because we believed in our team and that if we outworked them we would win."
The Timberwolves trailed 20-16 at the half, but outscored the Navigators 33-22 in the final two quarters for the nine-point win. They went 7 of 10 from the free throw line over the last 1:34 to hold off Northwest Christian.
Freshmen Ashley Kelly (20 points) and Whitney Elledge (15 pts) combined for 35 of the 49 points. Kelly tied her career-best in points which included a pair of three-pointers, 6 of 10 free tosses, six rebounds and three steals. Elledge also made a pair of long balls and converted 7 of 9 from the charity stripe. She handed out three assists and matched Chelbi Eveland with her five steals.
"Ashley did a great job the whole game being aggressive," Kanyer said. "I expect her and Whitney to play like that every game."
Jeanie Mullins scored four points, Darian Atkinson and Stefana Bertucci three each, and Maddy McCoy and Kayla Reynolds both added two. Eveland led Morton/White Pass with eight rebounds and Nicole Anderson grabbed five.
"We would not have won without Jeanie’s defense," Kanyer said. "She really stepped up her play at the right time."

vs Raymond (Feb.9, 2011 / district at Montesano)
Morton / White Pass played Raymond in their district opener and lost 49-26 to the Seagulls.
The Wolves led 6-4 after a quarter as Raymond missed their first 13 shots and 15 of their first 16. The shooting woes then moved down the court to the Morton/White Pass bench. After senior Nicole Anderson scored their sixth point on a rebound putback with 3:47 remaining in the first quarter, the Timberwolves went the next nine minutes and 12 seconds without a point until Ashley Kelly’s three-pointer. They turned the ball over 12 times during that span and missed all 10 field goal attempts.
"We really struggled during that stretch," coach Lauren Kanyer said. "We have to be a little more patient with the ball and make better decisions. I think we were nervous and we got a little tight."
Despite shooting just 16 percent in the first half (3 of 19) they trailed by just five points at the break (16-11).
Morton / White Pass scored just four points in the third quarter and committed 10 of their 30 turnovers.
Kelly finished with 12 points on 4 of 10 shooting (2 of 3 three-pointers) and nine rebounds in her district tournament debut. Fellow freshman Whitney Elledge and junior Chelbi Eveland (eight rebounds) each scored four points with Anderson and Darian Atkinson both putting in three. Ten of the 12 players for Morton/White Pass were making their first appearances in a district tournament game.
The Timberwolves outrebounded the Seagulls 43-38. Stefana Bertucci finished with six. They were 9 of 44 shooting for the game (.205).
"We’re not out of this tournament yet," Kanyer said. "We just need to play better."

vs Mossyrock (Feb. 4, 2011)
On Friday night in Morton the Vikings beat the Timberwolves 52-42.
“This was a big win for us after losing so bad to Napavine two nights earlier,” Mossyrock coach Gale Bridges said. “You never know if you can regroup after getting blown out of your own gym. I am real proud of this team; they came to play.”
Mossyrock scored the first five points of the game and led 12-7 after a quarter. The two Sams and Autumn Moorcroft scored all nine second quarter points for the Vikings with Sammi Snodgrass getting six, Sami Dolan two, and Moorcroft one. Snodgrass finished with 14 points, Moorcroft 11 and Dolan 10.
“I thought the biggest advantage we had was some great post play by Sammi, Sami, and Autumn,” Bridges said. “They combined for 35 points and grabbed 27 of our 42 rebounds.”
Mossyrock expanded their lead to as much as 18 in the final quarter (52-34, 1:48 to go) with Morton/White Pass scoring the final eight points of the game.
“We struggled a little bit at the end of the second quarter and that happens when we quit running our offense,” Bridges said. “We came out in the third quarter and were patient on offense, and it helped us to get a little bit of a lead. Morton/White Pass works hard the whole game so you better stay focused or your lead can slip away in a hurry. We had some great offensive rebounds and putbacks. Jordan (Nelson) scored all nine of her points in the second half. Teams try to take Jordan out of our offense so she really has to work extra hard for her points. She did a great job in the second half finding ways to score. The biggest thing I am pleased with was our free throw shooting (17 of 21). We have been working real hard on all aspects of our shooting, and it paid dividends. Autumn was 7 of 10 and Jordan was 3 of 4 at crunch time. Sammi finished 4 of 4 at the line.”
The Vikings were 17 of 50 for the game (.340). Jamie McLean and Montana Eastman each scored three points with Chelsea Dickinson getting two.
Freshman Ashley Kelly led the Timberwolves scoring 11 points with Kayla Reynolds and Chelbi Eveland each reaching double figures with 10 points. Darian Atkinson scored five points, Whitney Elledge four and Nicole Anderson two. They shot 41 percent for the game (14 of 34) from the field and 10 of 17 at the line.
“We didn’t play very well for most of the night,” Morton/White Pass coach Lauren Kanyer said. “We looked sluggish and didn’t seem to have a lot of energy. Mossyrock’s posts played well and we didn’t do a lot to slow them down. I was glad to see Kayla play well for us in the second half.”

at Wahkiakum (Feb. 2, 2011)
The Timberwolves posted their biggest win of the year with a 53-49 win on the road in Cathlamet. The win guaranteed a district berth for Morton/White Pass.
“This was my favorite game of the year so far,” coach Lauren Kanyer said. “The girls played pretty well all game. It was really nice to get a win down there.”
The Timberwolves hit three first quarter three-pointers in taking a 15-13 lead after one. The game was tied at 27-27 at the break. Then Morton/White Pass hit three more long balls in the third quarter and they led 40-38 after three.
After a five-minute scoring drought, freshman Darian Atkinson hit her fourth three-pointer of the game giving Morton/White Pass a 43-42 lead. The Mules took the lead on the next possession, before senior Nicole Anderson tied the game for the Timberwolves hitting one of two free throws.
After a pair of Wahkiakum free throws (46-44 Mules), Morton/White Pass scored seven* of the next eight points taking a 51-47 lead.
*Two of the baskets during the run were Ashley Kelly’s offensive rebound and putback with 2:43 to go and Chelbi Eveland’s foul line jumper that banked in as the shot clock ran down. Wahkiakum scored a basket with 21 seconds to go to draw within two points at 51-49. After a T-Wolves’ timeout, Anderson found herself with the ball and was fouled with 7.4 seconds to go. She missed both free throws, and the Mules blocked out everyone but Anderson who grabbed her third offensive rebound of the game, and was fouled again. With another try she calmly nailed both free throws for the final margin.
“It was nice to see Nicole step up and hit those free throws,” Kanyer said. “She’s a senior and with a second chance she did what seniors are supposed to do in that situation.”
Kelly and Atkinson (16 points each) and fellow freshman Whitney Elledge (eight points) combined to score 40 of the 53 points for Morton/White Pass.
“Ashley, Darian and Whitney stepped up and played well for us,” Kanyer said. “They made big plays all game. When we needed a big basket one of those three would make it.”
Eveland scored six, Anderson three, and Kayla Reynolds and Madison McCoy two each. They hit 8 of 23 three-pointers for the game (.348) and 13 of 23 free throws (.565). They committed a season-low 10 turnovers for the game.
The win was especially sweet for Kanyer who took an inexperienced group of Morton Huskies to Cathlamet two years ago and lost 88-23. The Mules scored 63 first half points and were trying to score 100.
